What whiplash means
Whiplash describes rapid back-and-forth movement of the head and neck. It may affect muscles, ligaments, joints, and other soft tissues. The term does not describe one identical injury in every patient.
Why symptoms may not be obvious at the scene
Stress hormones can temporarily change how pain is perceived. Muscle guarding and soft-tissue irritation may become more apparent after the body settles. Normal activities—driving, sleeping, computer work, or lifting—may reveal limitations later.
Common symptoms
- Neck pain or stiffness
- Reduced ability to turn the head
- Headaches
- Upper-back or shoulder pain
- Dizziness or concentration difficulty
- Arm pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness
- Sleep disruption
What an evaluation may include
A clinician may assess the accident mechanism, symptom timeline, range of motion, tenderness, strength, reflexes, and sensation. Imaging or referral may be recommended based on the history and examination.
